About Matthew Elias, MD

Matthew Elias, MD, is an attending cardiologist in the Cardiac Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He received his MD at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics.

With a focus on general pediatric cardiology, Dr. Elias sees patients ranging from newborns to young adults with a wide variety of congenital and acquired heart conditions. "Every patient is different and I approach each individually," he says. "I am extremely invested in their health and place great value on effective communication, honesty, and teamwork."

Dr. Elias explained that while treating children with serious heart conditions is incredibly demanding, it often comes with great rewards. "I find myself having quite serious discussions with families, and I can only imagine the stress they encounter. However, nothing is better, as a doctor and a parent myself, when I see great outcomes with my patients – running around in our office and just being kids. Those moments of laughter and smiles are what I look forward to the most."

Looking even further into the future, Dr. Elias sees rapid changes in his field. "Pediatric cardiology is still in its infancy. We are continually exploring new interventional, surgical and medical treatments to better treat and manage patients." Key to this evolution is capitalizing on the significant data that is being gathered on a daily basis.

In summarizing his work, Dr. Elias stressed the importance of not letting his patients’ heart conditions define them. "The ultimate goal is for them to live their normal lives, and I’ll be there as the safety net."

  • Dr. Elias was hands down the best. We took our 4 week old to him for a heart murmur and he was incredibly understanding of the many questions we had. He explained everything in detail we should expect from now through the next few appointments. I'd recommend him to anyone. He was just a down to earth compassionate doctor and that's what any parent of a newborn needs.

Additionally, he was prepared and reviewed all of the urgent care notes and notes from our previous appointment. He comes with my highest recommendation and confidence.

  • Doctor Elias is the best. He's great with kids, he's good at explaining things to the parents. And it's been so nice that there's been consistency in the faces my child sees every year. The nurses (like Lori) and the nurse practitioner, everyone wanted to say hi to my child and myself when they heard we were in the office. It makes something that could be scary or stressful not scary and stressful because you feel like even though CHOP is this huge network, these people know us and care about us

  • Cannot say enough great things about Dr. Elias and Katie, NP. Katie occupied my son while I was receiving some important diagnoses information which allowed me to concentrate on what Dr. Elias was saying. It was so thoughtful and enabled me to ask questions and fully receive the information. Her bedside manner was amazing. Dr. Elias had diagrams and pictures ready while delivering the news of my son's diagnoses to help me visualize and understand what was going on in his heart. He was patient, empathetic, and knowledgeable.

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
