Thalassemia Center
The Thalassemia Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) cares for children and adolescents with beta thalassemia, alpha thalassemia and other thalassemia syndromes. We aim to help these children have the best possible quality of life.
If your child has one of these conditions, we offer every type of treatment, including:
- Red cell transfusions
- Chelation therapy, which gets rid of excess iron in the blood due to transfusions
- FDA-approved gene therapy, called Zynteglo, for beta thalassemia
We carefully monitor your child using laboratory tests, special magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the amount of iron in the heart and liver, bone density scans and more.
We know that regular transfusions can be a challenge for children. We will support your entire family in all your needs.
Why choose us for thalassemia care
We are one of the select specialized hospitals, called Qualified Treatment Centers (QTCs), that offer Zynteglo® (betibeglogene autotemcel), an FDA-approved gene therapy for transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia. The gene therapy is provided through a partnership between the Thalassemia Center, the Sickle Cell and Red Cell Disorders Curative Therapy Center (CuRED), and the Cellular Therapy and Transplant Section (CTTS).
