CHOP Open-access Medical Education: Pediatric Cardiology Course Presentations
Introducing CHOP OPEN!
We have launched our new and improved learning platform, CHOP OPEN. Learn more and register for free.
This seminar focuses on pediatric cardiology and was delivered in Salzburg, Austria, from January 7 – 31, 2018. The lectures are prepared by staff from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in weeklong modules that are prepared in affiliation with the American Austrian Foundation Open Medical Institute. The lectures of this seminar are presented in the order of the live event.
Introduction to Congenital Heart Disease
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to review the presentation of congenital heart disease (CHD) and explain an overview of the physiology, epidemiology and anatomy of CHD.
Presenter: Matthew J. O’Connor, MDPediatric Echocardiography
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to explain the basic physics involved in echocardiography, identify the imaging planes necessary for a comprehensive cardiac anatomical evaluation, evaluate right and left ventricular, function and determine right ventricle/pulmonary artery pressure.
Presenter: Michael D. Quartermain, MD3D Technology in the Care of Patients with CHD
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to identify the three different imaging processes: segmentation, volume rendering, and registration. Learners will also be able to discuss the limits of the technologies and the impact 3D imaging has on clinical outcomes.
Presenter: Yoav Dori, MD, PhDDifferentiating Benign from Malignant Syncope
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to define and differentiate benign from malignant syncope, identify conditions that cause sudden death, and review management of benign syncope.
Presenter: V. Ramesh Iyer, MD, MRCPInterventions for Single Ventricle Failure
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to describe single ventricle pathway, the different stages of single ventricle interventions, and complications involved in performing single ventricle surgeries.
Presenter: Yoav Dori, MD, PhDVariation in Prenatal Diagnosis of Congenital Heart Disease
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to assess the rates and trends of prenatal diagnosis (PND), the needs for prenatal detection, and how PND can positively impact the outcomes of surgical interventions.
Presenter: Michael D. Quartermain, MDUnderstanding SVT Mechanisms and Management
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to identify the mechanisms of different narrow and wide complex arrhythmias and describe ways to manage both simple and complex arrhythmias.
Presenter: V. Ramesh Iyer, MD, MRCPUpdates in Fetal Echocardiography: Fetal Echo for Complex CHD
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to identify indications and timing for fetal echocardiograms, the advantages of prenatal diagnosis in critical CHD, and discuss an example for fetal evaluation of hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
Presenter: Michael D. Quartermain, MDAnti-Arrhythmic Drug Management of Pediatric Arrhythmias
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to identify the basic principles of excitability around excitation coupling and cellular electrophysiology, understand why certain antiarrhythmic drug classes are used in clinical application, and describe how dosing and specific uses can impact side effects.
Presenter: V. Ramesh Iyer, MD, MRCPChronic Heart Failure in Congenital Heart Disease
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to explain how heart failure is defined specifically in CHD, identify classic lesions that may eventually end up in heart failure, and summarize how ventricular assist devices and heart transplantation is used in the setting of CHD.
Presenter: Matthew J. O’Connor, MDCHOP/HUP Jill and Mark Fishman Center for Lymphatic Disorders
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to describe considerations in caring for children with lymphatic disorders and identify treatment techniques and complications associated with lymphatic interventions.
Presenter: Yoav Dori, MD, PhDOverview of Pediatric Heart Transplantation
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to outline general concepts of heart transplantation involving the history of the procedure, the different types of transplantation, and major post-transplant complications that may occur.
Presenter: Matthew J. O’Connor, MDEchocardiography of Coronary Arteries in Congenital Heart Disease
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to assess the role of echocardiography in CHD and rarities of congenital anomalies and identify additional imaging modalities that compliment echocardiography.
Presenter: Michael D. Quartermain, MDInherited Channelopathies
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to describe the monogenic causes of sudden death as well as explain the clinical approach to diagnosing patients with inherited channelopathies and comprehensive treatment of channelopathies.
Presenter: V. Ramesh Iyer, MD, MRCPThe Athlete in Pediatric Cardiology
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to outline the potential etiologies of sudden cardiac events, describe epidemiology in pediatric patients with an emphasis on the athlete, and discuss recent literature and professional guidelines regarding athletic participation in patients with pre-existing cardiac disease.
Presenter: Matthew J. O’Connor, MD
