About Aseem R. Shukla, MD, MHCI

Dr. Aseem R. Shukla is the Endowed Chair and Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Professor of Surgery in Urology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Shukla’s clinical and research interests include robot-assisted laparoscopy and the bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex, and also spans hypospadias, urinary reflux, hydronephrosis and complex urinary tract reconstruction. He is active in developing pediatric urology as a discipline globally.

He serves as CHOP’s Medical Director for Strategic Alliances. In that role, Dr. Shukla provides medical leadership in the planning, assessment and execution of health system relationships that enhance care at affiliate sites and when those children visit CHOP. He previously served as a physician lead for CHOP Global Medicine where he provided consultation and strategic input in developing opportunities for partnerships and collaborations that serve to increase access to pediatric healthcare services in South Asia and the Gulf Region.

Dr. Shukla routinely lectures and participates in surgical workshops and conferences throughout Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. Recognizing that lasting change can only come with innovation through commitment, in 2009, Dr. Shukla initiated a surgical workshop at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, India, that has become an international model of Indo-U.S. academic collaboration.

This collaboration brings together a leading American children's hospital and India's most respected pediatric surgeons to address the vast surgical burden of complex urological anomalies in India. The annual Bladder Exstrophy-Epispadias consortium brings together academic surgeons, local hospital systems, American disease specific support groups and research staff leading to the creation of an international Center of Excellence in Ahmedabad, that is now a referral destination for all of South Asia and Africa.

Dr. Shukla completed his residency in general surgery and urology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and his fellowship in pediatric urology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Prior to returning to the Division of Urology in 2012, Dr. Shukla served as the first Director of Urology at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital and held associate professorships in urology and pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. Additionally, Dr. Shukla served as the Residency Program Director of the University of Minnesota Department of Urology.

  • Dr Shulka was very friendly and kept me at ease while explaining everything that was going on with my son. He made sure all my questions were answered. Only issue I had was that he reviewed the ultrasound in the room with us. I like that he reviewed the ultrasound with us but he didn't read the radiologist report which contained the reason why we were there. He is the specialist so him looking at the ultrasound means more than the radiologists but I was referred to CHOP because the radiologist read the scan as having something more serious present. I had to bring that up which once again Dr Shulka is the expert so his read of the scan is the most important. I just wanted that concern addressed. When I brought it up, he answered my question thoroughly and I was extremely satisfied with our visit.

  • Steve, the physicians assistant, and Dr. Shukla were amazing. Both of them thoroughly reviewed my daughters history before walking into the room and speaking with me. It was very refreshing to know that they already knew what was going on with her, even before meeting us.We live almost 2 hours away, and we will certainly make the trip back to chop. King of Prussia whenever we need care for our daughter. I feel so good as a parent, knowing that my daughters records were reviewed by the best of best in the country. In addition to Steve and Dr. Shukla, everyone at CHOP King of Prussia, was so friendly. From the parking lot attendant, to the front desk worker, to the check-in folks, the nurses, the people in the cafeteria, everyone. You guys have a first class operation there and we are so happy to have experienced it with our daughter.

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
