On May 14 and 15, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) hosted its sixth annual Philly Spin-In, a high-energy team cycling party, raising more than $812,000 (and counting!) to benefit the Cardiac Center at CHOP.

Every human deserves a fair shot at living a healthy life. However, many of our country’s societal systems have been established to exclude certain groups from this opportunity, leading to disparities in health and life expectancy.

The Integrative Health (IH) Program at CHOP subscribes to a novel patient care approach using the whole-person health model.

Kiyanna is a 9-year-old girl of mixed parentage (mother is Caucasian and father is African-American) who presented with abdominal pain, gas, headaches, and dizziness for the last 3 years of increasing severity and frequency, especially since March 2020. She is underweight.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia ranked No. 1 on Forbes’ 2022 list of America’s Best Large Employers. The recognition highlights CHOP’s implementation of various programs designed to help employees navigate the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as flexibility in scheduling, bringing back retired nurses, and offering subsidized childcare.

My journey into Integrative Medicine began before I even knew of it as a recognized medical subspecialty. As a stressed out third-year medical student nearing burnout, I knew I had to take drastic measures to decrease the symptoms I was experiencing so early into my career.

This year, I sat down with Dr Alan Cohen, who has been a CHOP hematologist for 50 years and served as the Physician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics for 12 years (2001-2013).

CHOP researchers have integrated environmental, genetic, and imaging data to better understand which factors might be clinically relevant when it comes to psychiatric and cognitive outcomes.
