When your child is sick or hospitalized, you may face many emotional and practical challenges. The Department of Social Work at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is here to help.
Our team of nearly 100 masters-level social workers play an important role on your child’s care team. Available 24/7, we provide compassionate support and counseling, and can connect you to community or hospital resources to best meet your family’s needs.
We’re here to help during inpatient hospitalizations, outpatient appointments and even after you return home. We are committed to providing caring, comprehensive support for your child and family throughout your healthcare journey.

How we can help
Here at CHOP, our social workers provide a variety of clinical services for your child and family. We can answer questions related to insurance, school access or legal rights. We provide support for families navigating a difficult diagnosis. We can also connect you with hospital and community resources to help support your family throughout your healthcare journey.
Most of our staff work with specific programs and provide specialized expertise. Their services may include:
- Psychosocial and behavioral health assessments
- Crisis intervention
- Supportive counseling
- Help navigating the hospital system
- Grief counseling
- Child advocacy/protection
- Guidance related to missed work or school because of a medical condition
- Assistance accessing hospital and community resources, including healthcare and insurance coverage
- Consultation with hospital staff and/or other community agencies
- Discharge planning
