Advanced Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Fellowship

Advanced Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Fellowship

Training tomorrow's leaders

The Advanced Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Fellowship is a two-year specialized training program offering unparalleled clinical depth and rigor, as well as opportunities for cutting-edge translational and basic science research.

The number of people with IBD is increasing worldwide, especially in children.

While all pediatric gastroenterologists learn about IBD diagnosis and treatment during training, there is significant variation in the treatment of IBD. In the past decade, there have been substantial advances in our understanding of IBD, new medications are now available, and treatment paradigms are shifting, making it increasingly important for physicians to be well versed in the latest evidence-based approaches.

At Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), we recognized the need for advanced training in IBD for pediatric gastroenterologists and created the Advanced IBD Fellowship Program. Fellows will work directly with experts from our Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

We offer fellows:

  • A structured curriculum that addresses clinical, research, procedural and didactic components
  • World-renowned faculty with more than 200 years of combined experience treating patients and conducting clinical, translation and basic science research
  • Physicians and staff with specific expertise in very early onset IBD and nutritional therapies for IBD
  • A large and diversified patient population

Program goals

We will:

  • Train pediatric gastroenterologists to deliver comprehensive medical care to pediatric patients with IBD
  • Train pediatric gastroenterologists to become experts in:
    • The epidemiology of IBD
    • IBD pathogenesis and natural history
    • IBD diagnostics, such as biochemical testing, imaging and video capsule endoscopy
    • IBD therapies, therapeutic drug monitoring and nutrition
    • IBD maintenance of remission and preventative care
    • Psychosocial aspects of IBD care
  • Prepare pediatric gastroenterologists for leadership roles within academic settings and advocacy organizations
  • Prepare pediatric gastroenterologists to effectively collaborate with other members of the care team, referring physicians, primary care doctors, and other providers within the pediatric IBD community

Training sites

Fellows will work under the direct supervision of an attending gastroenterologist at these locations:

  • Kohl’s GI Nutrition and Diagnostic Center at CHOP’s Main Campus
  • Outpatient clinics in the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care
  • Research laboratories in the Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Pediatric Research Center and on the University of Pennsylvania campus

How to apply

Applicants for the Advanced IBD Fellowship Program must have completed a pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition fellowship in the United States or Canada before entering the program. Candidates from outside the U.S. or Canada require equivalent training.

Selected applicants will be interviewed in person by at least three faculty members from CHOP’s Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease. A group interview will also take place and may include staff from the IBD Center including the program manager, program coordinator and nursing staff.
