Osteomyelitis Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department and Inpatient

Emergency department and inpatient pathway for the treatment of infants or children older than 56 days who are suspected of having a bone infection or osteomyelitis. Patients may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms: significant bone pain and/or tenderness with or without warmth and swelling, limp or refusal to bear weight, constitutional symptoms (irritability, decreased activity and/or appetite), or fever (absence of fever does not rule out osteomyelitis).

The continuous administration of IV fluids inpatient pathway outlines the algorithm for selecting the initial IV fluid composition and rate when treating a hospitalized patient who requires IV fluids due to dehydration and/or the inability to take 100% of their fluid needs enterally.
