Preparing for vaccine visits at any age

Did you know that the Vaccine Education Center offers age-based tips to help you and your family navigate vaccine appointments? The tips include ideas for before, during and after visits and are offered for different age groups from infancy through adulthood.

Recently, we updated these webpages to include information about a novel approach to vaccine appointments, called the CARD system. Developed by AboutKidsHealth in Canada, the program “provides strategies that can be used to help cope before and during vaccination and needle procedures.”

Comic book series about vaccines for 9- to 12-year-olds

Recently, Dr. Susan Nasif Obeid-Adorisio, who has a doctorate degree in virology and is the founder of Cimaza Virology Comics, authored and illustrated a comic book series for adolescents. Called “The Amazing Adventures of Syrgo and BC,” the series features BC, an immune system cell, and Syrgo, a fact-checking furry hamster. The series currently includes two comic books with a third one coming soon. Each book can be downloaded for free in multiple languages. Check them out or learn more today:

Find this and other resources for children and teens on the VEC’s “Vaccine Resources for Kids and Teens” page.

In the absence of Twitter’s blue check mark

After the blue check mark came to have a different meaning on Twitter, people who relied on it as a means of verifying the source of content were left with one less tool when assessing the accuracy of information presented on that platform.

The News Literacy Project (NLP) can help! First, they prepared a fact-based entry related to the blue check mark system. Second, they created a tool, called Rumor Guard, which can be accessed to see if they have addressed particular content that you are seeing. When evaluating content, the NLP team evaluates credibility based on five factors, including source, evidence, context, reasoning and authenticity. Find out more about Rumor Guard or bookmark it today!
