About William Anninger, MD

William Anninger, MD, is a pediatric ophthalmologist in the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

He chose his specialty because of a passion for caring for children with vision loss.

“I’m committed to providing excellent clinical experiences and outcomes for kids and their families,” he says.

Dr. Anninger has expertise in pediatric strabismus, pediatric cataracts and anterior segment anomalies, retinopathy of prematurity, eye trauma and vision issues. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Michigan and received his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. He was an intern at Cambridge City Hospital, Harvard University, and completed his post-doctoral training at the William Havener Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio. In 2006 he completed his fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Anninger’s research centers on treating orbital cellulitis, the causes of nystagmus, and using the Artisan intraocular lens for aphakic patients with poor capsular support. He has published articles and book chapters on a wide variety of topics involving pediatric ophthalmology disorders and their treatment.

Along with his role at CHOP, Dr. Anninger is an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the Scheie Eye Institute.

His hope is that children and their families come away from their experiences at CHOP with the knowledge that they received “clinically excellent care and surgery provided with empathy and compassion.”

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
