About Gregory Heuer, MD, PhD

Dr. Heuer was born and raised in Prior Lake, Minnesota. He studied Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Minnesota and then received his MD and PhD degrees from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his neurosurgery residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and his fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Heuer holds the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Endowed Chair in Pediatric Neurosurgery and serves as CHOP’s Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship Director.  He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurosurgery and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.  He is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons, Neurosurgical Society of America, Congress of Neurosurgeons, and the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery.Clinically, Dr. Heuer has a broad interest in all areas of pediatric neurosurgery but has a special focus on conditions that affect children before and just after birth. This includes surgery for hydrocephalus, congenital malformations of the brain, and various forms of spina bifida

Dr. Heuer collaborates with the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT), aiming to improve outcomes of children suffering from conditions discovered before birth. These conditions include hydrocephalus, lipomyelomeingoceles, meningoceles, myelomeningoceles, and encephaloceles.  In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Heuer’s has an interest in and leads many efforts in patient outcomes and quality improvement initiatives.

When not at work, Dr. Heuer’s primary focus is his family, including his wife and daughter.

  • Dr Heuer is the kindest and most down to earth doctor we've had at CHOP. He treated our sun with warmth and playfulness that was so genuine, and he put us at ease, taking the time to describe in detail what we were working through. We're SO grateful he's apart of our son's care. I don't usually fill these out because I don't have the time, but he deserves the kudos and accolades coming to him!!! Thanks Dr Heuer!!

  • Dr. Heuer explained my daughter's condition very clearly, drew on the whiteboard to illustrate his point, and thoroughly and efficiently discussed the treatment options and concerns. He was very reassuring, and I am so glad that he took care of my daughter. I recommend him very highly!

  • We absolutely love Dr. Heuer. He is an amazing provider and we owe him everything for saving our baby. We trust him completely and feel safe knowing he is caring for our child. He makes us feel like a family not a doctor patient relationship.

  • Dr. Heuer and his staff were excellent. Despite our son having spinal cord surgery, it was a pleasant experience. Everyone was informative, friendly and professional. They made us feel at ease. I'd recommend Dr. Heuer in a heartbeat.

  • Dr Heuer went above and beyond in his care of my child. He listens carefully, takes his time and makes my son feel like an individual, not just a "case to manage." Dr Heuer also made things as easy as possible for our family. Dr Heuer exceeds expectations in knowledge, quality of care and bedside manner.

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
