About David A. Piccoli, MD

David A. Piccoli, MD, is nationally-renown pediatric gastroenterologist, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

Dr. Piccoli provides individualized and compassionate care for children with liver disorders, intestinal bowel disease, and other gastrointestinal conditions. Patients from around the world are referred to him for treatment and second opinions.

“My goal as a doctor, researcher and leader at CHOP is to incorporate the newest science and best technology to improve treatments and outcomes for all children,” Dr. Piccoli says. “That translates into every aspect of my work.”

Dr. Piccoli has a special interest in treating children with complex and chronic liver and bowel disorders that are often difficult to manage.

“Some children present with such a wide variety of symptoms that finding the right treatment for that specific child can be challenging,” Dr. Piccoli says. “There are so many moving pieces; it’s like a puzzle. And it’s very satisfying to me to find the right solution for that child.”

Education and experience

Dr. Piccoli earned his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. He was a medical resident and later chief resident at what-was-then Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston, MA.

Dr. Piccoli completed a one-year clinical fellowship, followed by a two-year research fellowship, in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He became an attending physician and a member of the research faculty at CHOP in 1985.

In 1990, Dr. Piccoli was named director of clinical service for the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition. For the following eight years, he took on positions of increasing responsibility — section chief, medical director of the Pediatric Anorectal Continence Evaluation Program, associate chairman for outreach, and acting division chief.

In 1998, he was named division chief for the newly combined Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

Making an impact

During Dr. Piccoli’s tenure as chief, the Division has nearly tripled in size, and has vastly expanded its clinical and research mission in gastrointestinal, hepatology and nutritional disorders. Support services in the division have expanded to include psychologists, social workers, dietitians, specialty nurses and others who provide care for children’s minds and bodies. At the same time, the Division has trained more than 100 fellows — the next generation of gastroenterologists.

Along with Dr. Piccoli’s role overseeing the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, he has been active in a number of division programs. In 2004, he was named director — and later endowed chair — of the Fred and Suzanne Biesecker Pediatric Liver Center. He is also very active in the Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Dr. Piccoli has also been a leader at CHOP, serving as executive sponsor of EpicCare CHOPLink implementation, and associate chairman for information technology for the Department of Pediatrics at CHOP. And, for more than 20 years, he has served as a professor of pediatrics at CHOP and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Piccoli is also co-director of the HUP-CHOP Joint Center for Digestive, Liver and Pancreatic Diseases, a joint venture between CHOP, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Research and recognition

Along with Dr. Piccoli’s active clinical practice and administrative duties, he continues to pursue research about metabolic and genetic liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease and rare gastrointestinal disorders. He is a member of the group that discovered Jagged1 and NOTCH2 as the primary causes of Alagille syndrome.

He has authored more than 90 papers, 40 chapters, 130 research abstracts and edited four books on areas of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. He has also presented hundreds of lectures on conditions such as Alagille syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease and viral hepatitis.

Dr. Piccoli has received a number of awards for his clinical care, teaching, mentorship, research and work with charitable foundations. He has served on local and national boards, including the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the American Gastroenterological Association, the National Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, and the American Liver Foundation.

  • Both Dr Kennedy & Dr Piccoli are top notch with excellent bedside manner with us as parents and our child. They made us feel comfortable and well cared for during the entire visit. They listened to our concerns and questions and provided feedback accordingly.

  • I love how the drs are very relatable and also teach. They keep us so informed in a detailed format. I hate to google info, so I'm glad Dr Piccoli is our physical webMD! I love how he addresses my son, too. So my son can feel part of the decision making and responsible for his health. I can easily attend my local GI team but we feel like home and safe with Dr Piccoli and his team. They keep us well informed and are extremely attentive. For having so many patients, they treat each one individually as if they were the only patient. No comparisons, either. Thank you...a million times!

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
