Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology
Children with heart defects may react differently to anesthesia. The Cardiac Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has a special anesthesia team dedicated to caring for cardiac patients. The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology is one of the few programs in the United States that provides anesthesia services exclusively to pediatric patients with heart disease and heart defects who may react differently to anesthesia and require specialized care.
Each year, our team provides anesthesia and pain management services for infants, children and adolescents in more than 3,000 surgeries and other procedures. While our surgical and anesthesia teams primarily work at CHOP locations, we perform off-site repairs at select hospitals in the region for fragile newborns with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).

Our program provides:
- Comprehensive anesthesia services and pain management for cardiac patients
- Sedation during echocardiography for infants and active children
- Anesthesia and pain management for Cardiac Center patients during non-cardiac procedures
- Off-site repairs for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)

We offer six distinct fellowship programs to attract, develop and train exceptional doctors and have trained more than 200 physicians to date.
