Avery Marz had it all: a loving family, great friends, and a scholarship to play basketball at Saint Joe’s University. But on move-in day, Avery collapsed. Her mother, MaryBeth, noticed the way the left side of Avery’s face had drooped and knew what was happening immediately: Her 17-year-old daughter had just had a stroke. They sought expert care at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Pediatric Stroke Program, where Avery underwent treatment and began an intensive rehabilitation program. Today, she’s back in school and back on the court.
