Marking a Milestone: Our King of Prussia N/IICU Turns 1 Year Old
January 13, 2025

In December 2023, the Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit (N/IICU) opened at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia's Middleman Family Pavilion in King of Prussia, Pa., known colloquially as KOP. This N/IICU expands access to CHOP for patients who require critical care in the greater Philadelphia area. The unit provides level III NICU care, including access to surgical subspecialties. There are 18 private patient rooms, each with designated in-suite space for families.

In the year since it opened, the KOP N/IICU has had more than 250 admissions and an additional 30 transfers from the Philadelphia campus. Half of the admissions have been from emergency departments, predominantly from the one at our KOP hospital, with a small percentage coming from outside referring emergency departments. The other half of admissions have come from referring hospitals. Half of patients from outside referrals have come from CHOP Newborn Care Community Affiliate Hospitals; we have had many additional patients come from northwest of KOP, and as far as northern New Jersey and southern Maryland.

We have cared for patients who need neurology consultations including new onset seizures, neonatal encephalopathy with therapeutic hypothermia and hypotonia evaluations. Patients have required treatment for acute respiratory failure, evolving chronic lung disease of prematurity, retinopathy of prematurity, and evaluation and diagnosis for genetic concerns in partnership with the Division of Human Genetics. We have also provided inpatient consultations with services including pulmonology, endocrinology, ENT, plastic surgery, orthopedics and infectious diseases. Patients have received procedures including inguinal hernia repairs, gastrostomy tube placement, interventional radiology procedures and retinal laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Diagnostic procedures have included suction rectal biopsy, contrast GI studies and sleep studies.

Our census has risen over the past year. We opened with 10 beds and now have 18. We’ve had several sets of twins and have been able to provide palliative care through collaboration with CHOP’s Pediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT).

Admission to this N/IICU occurs through transport from referring or CHOP Newborn Care facilities, intercampus transfers, in-house escalated level of care, or through the Emergency Department at our King of Prussia Campus. CHOP transport service, with direct consultation with the CHOP Philadelphia N/IICU medical command physician, will determine disposition to either the Philadelphia Campus or the King of Prussia Campus, based on services needed and the proximity to the referring hospital.
