About Katia Stewart, MD
Katia Stewart, MD, is an urgent care pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
Dr. Stewart has worked at CHOP since May 2019. Her favorite part of seeing patients is when providing timely, effective sick care also offers the opportunity to suggest positive long-term change in a child’s habits and behaviors. “I love when families ask, ‘How I can prevent this from happening again?’ I’m always happy to provide those extra pieces of information.”
“Children have an amazing ability to heal, and I am in awe of their resilience even in moments of adversity,” Dr. Stewart says. She is the child of two physicians. In particular, she describes her dad as “more like a countryside family physician.” When she saw people healing under his care, she vowed to follow the same path.
Nutrition is a special interest of Dr. Stewart, and she finds creative ways to introduce the subject in a clinical setting. “Kids (and parents) love when I ‘prescribe’ homemade smoothies or shakes. They can be fun as well as nutritious, and they go down well when you have a sore throat or don't feel like eating. I often modify that to recommend homemade popsicles and even soups, depending on the issue that we’re dealing with.” Dr. Stewart herself is an avid hiker and cook. She enjoys spending time outdoors and experiencing the world and its flavors with her family.
CHOP’s pediatric Urgent Care Centers provide fast, convenient care for children and teens with non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Typically, these are situations when your child can’t wait until the pediatrician’s office is open, but they don’t need the resources of an emergency department (ED). Urgent Care Centers are staffed by board-certified pediatricians and pediatric nurses with expertise in caring for children with urgent healthcare needs. The facilities offer onsite X-rays and testing to help with fast diagnosis and treatment plans.
