About Marissa J. Perman, MD

Pediatric dermatologist Marissa J. Perman, MD, has always wanted to be a pediatrician and care for children like her father, a pediatric gastroenterologist. But, Dr. Perman’s interest gravitated toward the field of dermatology. In dermatology, doctors can visualize a problem “firsthand on the skin,” explains Dr. Perman. Becoming a pediatric dermatologist was a perfect match of interests for her. She brings a deep understanding and passion for both specialties to her practice.

Dr. Perman provides patients and families with complete, thoughtful evaluations. It’s important to her to involve families in medical decisions. She wants them to feel informed and knowledgeable about a diagnosis and its treatment.

Dr. Perman enjoys caring for patients who have aspects of their disease that need to be coordinated with other doctors. She runs the Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) Multidisciplinary Clinic at CHOP. The EB clinic treats children who have a rare, blistering disorder. Many of her patients have extracutaneous issues that must be followed and managed. Dr. Perman enjoys coordinating this care, drawing on her background in pediatrics. Similarly, she joins two other providers in a multidisciplinary clinic providing care for patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) every month.

Research in the field of dermatology is exciting right now, explains Dr. Perman. “There is a lot of new research, especially into the development of new therapies that are better targeted to the pathophysiology of specific diseases including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and vascular anomalies in children,” she explains. “This is a great time to be a pediatric dermatologist as we can offer better, more targeted treatments than in the past.” Dr. Perman’s current research interests focus mainly on epidermolysis bullosa.

  • Dr. Perman is a gift from God. She took her time and explained all the information throughly. She's gentle and kind in nature. We discussed together the plan for non-active intervention for my son, rather than her impose any medical direction. It did not feel rushed: she Interacted with my son and I separately. I could tell she empathized with my concerns. We are blessed to have landed in her care moving forward for my son's vitiligo.

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
