About Kathleen J. Maguire, MD
Kathleen J. Maguire, MD, is an attending orthopedic surgeon with the Orthopedic Center and the Sports Medicine and Performance Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). She specializes in treating children and adolescents with sports injuries and has a particular interest in working with performance athletes, including dancers, gymnasts and figure skaters.
Dr. Maguire’s interest in pediatric orthopedics stretches back to her childhood when she was diagnosed with scoliosis at 8 years old, for which she was treated in a brace for almost 10 years.
“During that time I grew to appreciate the work that pediatric orthopedic surgeons do and the types of patients that we get to take care of,” Dr. Maguire says.
Dr. Maguire was very active in sports and dance. She performed through college and danced professionally with Walt Disney World Entertainment. This personal experience has given her a deep appreciation of the athletic and artistic demands of dance.
The feet, ankles and hips are very susceptible to dance injuries, and are therefore particular areas of interest in Dr. Maguire’s practice. Advances in treatment, particularly with arthroscopic approaches to hip injuries, hold great promise, she says.
Dr. Maguire’s philosophy of care is centered on working closely with her patients to restore their health and get them back to doing what they love.
“I embrace a team approach to patient care. I believe that a patient and his or her family are active participants in their medical and surgical care. I want my patients to feel supported by our sports medicine and orthopedic surgery teams and to be empowered to protect their health, optimize their performance, and maximize their recovery,” Dr. Maguire says.
