About Priyanka Kumar, MD

Priyanka Kumar, MD, is a pediatric ophthalmologist and attending surgeon in the Division of Ophthalmology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

Dr. Kumar has a special interest in retinopathy of prematurity, strabismus in adults and children, amblyopia, anterior segment surgery, pediatric ocular trauma, and surgical and non-surgical management of pediatric cornea and ocular surface abnormalities.

She was drawn to ophthalmology because of the “beauty and complexity of the eye and the importance of vision on our quality of life,” Dr. Kumar says.

Working with children is especially fulfilling, in part because of their constantly evolving and dynamic visual systems, she says.

“This has its own unique challenges, but we have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the quality of life for each and every child, and in some cases, this is literally the difference between a non-seeing eye or eyes, versus a lifetime of functional vision.”

Along with her work at CHOP, Dr. Kumar is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Kumar is enthusiastic about the drive within the field for constant innovation and progress, both in technology and the practice of evidence-based medicine. Gene therapeutics and innovations with laser therapies and other surgical techniques hold great promise, she says.

  • Dr Kumar is excellent! We've seen her for years and are always so happy with how our visits go. She's kind, patient, and answers all of our questions. She also lets my daughter ask questions about her own care and never rushes her through the appointment. We're so glad to have Dr Kumar as her doctor.

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
