About Sara B. DeMauro, MD

Sara B. DeMauro, MD, MSCE, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Clinician Educator Track at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Program Director for Neonatal Follow-up and attending neonatologist in the Division of Neonatology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  Dr. DeMauro obtained her master's degree in clinical epidemiology (MSCE) with a focus in clinical trials at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) during her fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at CHOP.

Dr. DeMauro is also appointed as Associate Scholar in the CCEB.  Her primary clinical and research focus is in studying methods to improve early childhood outcomes after critical neonatal illness.  CHOP/Penn has been a member of the NICHD Neonatal Research Network (NRN) since 2011. She is the Lead Follow-up Investigator and Alternate Principal Investigator (PI) for the CHOP/Penn NRN center. Our local NRN observational study and randomized trial follow-up rates at 22-26 months corrected age consistently exceed 95%.

In addition, as Program Director for Neonatal Follow-up at CHOP, Dr. DeMauro oversees follow-up activities, education, and program development in 6 neonatal follow-up clinics throughout the CHOP Newborn Care Network.  There are currently more than 5,000 children enrolled in the follow-up program.  She is independently funded by NHLBI as PI for the Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC) of the HYdrocortisone for BPD Developmental and Respiratory (HYBRiD) Outcomes Study and the Transfusion of Prematures 5-year (TOP 5) Early School Age Study, by NICHD as a site PI for the Outcomes of Babies with Opioid Exposure (OBOE) Longitudinal Study, and by the Thrasher Research Fund.  These grants all fund studies of functional clinical outcomes among young children who were born prematurely or have other risk factors for poor outcomes.
