About Andrew J. Bauer, MD

Andrew J Bauer, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania and serves as the director of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Thyroid Center. Dr. Bauer completed his undergraduate at Canisius College and his medical degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric training at Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Tacoma, WA and his pediatric endocrine training at the National Capital Consortium, Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, MD. In 2013, Dr. Bauer retired from the United States Army after 33 years of credible service, to include two combat tours in Iraq.

Dr. Bauer’s clinical and research interests span across the spectrum of pediatric thyroid disorders, including hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroid hormone resistance and transport disorders, thyroid nodular disease, thyroid cancer, and familial thyroid tumor syndromes. Within this field, he has published more than 120 manuscripts, chapters and reviews and is a regularly invited lecturer and visiting professor at international meetings and academic institutes. In 2019, Dr. Bauer established a translational science research program to better define the molecular landscape of pediatric thyroid cancer focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment. Within the past year, Dr. Bauer and his team launched an international Child and Adolescent Thyroid Consortium to expand multicenter collaboration. Dr. Bauer serves as a medical consultant for the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association and as the thyroid consultant for the International Pleuropulmonary blastoma/DICER1 registry. Dr. Bauer maintains active membership in the Endocrine Society, the Pediatric Endocrine Society, and the American Thyroid Association (ATA) where he is currently serving as chair of the ATA pediatric thyroid nodule and thyroid cancer guidelines.

  • Stephanie Robbins and Dr. Bauer were great with my daughter. Stephanie took her time explaining the disease process to both me and my daughter, and she took her time while doing the ultrasound. Stephanie talked through the diagnosis and showed me my daughter's ultrasound while explaining what they were looking for. Both Stephanie and Dr. Bauer took their time with us during our visit and talked to my daughter directly about her diagnosis and treatment plan. They are kind and intelligent and we know our daughter is in the best care with them.

  • Dr. Bauer is, without a doubt, the kindest, most compassionate, and knowledgeable doctor any of our family members have ever seen. I can't recommend him highly enough. His kindness brought my teenage daughter to tears. She feels seen and heard by him, something no other doctor has provided. I am eternally grateful for that.

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
