About Javaneh Abbasian, MD

Dr. Javaneh Abbasian is an adult and pediatric ophthalmologist whose areas of expertise include glaucoma and cataracts in both children and adults.

Dr. Abbasian received her Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology from Northwestern University and her MD from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary at UIC, where she also served as Chief Medical Resident in 2011. She further specialized with a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 2012 and a fellowship in Glaucoma at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary at UIC from 2020 to 2022.

Dr. Abbasian most recently held academic positions at the University of Illinois Chicago as Clinical Associate Professor and at Northwestern Medicine as a lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology. Since 2019, she has served as the Chief of Ophthalmology at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, where she focused on resident cataract teaching and adult glaucoma care while trying to improve the operations of the eye service.

Dr. Abbasian's diverse publications have spanned topics in pediatric ophthalmology; most recently she focused on the novel use of topical netarsudil in pediatric glaucomas. She has an interest in holistic care for families of children with pediatric glaucoma and started a 501c(3) non-profit called the Midwest Center for Childhood Glaucoma and Cataracts in 2018 to meet some of the non-medical needs of her patients. She hopes to bring her experiences and expertise to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and to Scheie Eye institute to equip pediatric glaucoma patients and their families with the supports that are unique to their needs. Dr. Abbasian loves the outdoors and is excited to be reuinted with Wissahickon State park, where she spent many weekends years ago and now can't wait to bring her husband and three children.
