Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Clinic
Children and teens with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) receive comprehensive, compassionate medical care in the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Clinic at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Our specialists, from the divisions of Endocrinology, Dermatology and Nutrition, have expertise in PCOS.
The PCOS Clinic offers physical exams, laboratory testing, nutritional counseling, and other family-centered services. Girls and their family members are assigned to an exam room, and the clinicians rotate among the rooms. Each child's unique care plan is created collaboratively, so medicines and therapies complement each other.
About two-thirds of girls with PCOS are overweight, so there is a focus on nutrition counseling and healthy eating. Metabolic complications that can lead to cardiac disease are a risk of PCOS, so screenings are an important part of ongoing care.
How we serve you
While PCOS cannot be cured, we treat the various symptoms and risks of PCOS, including hormonal changes, excess weight, acne, excessive hair growth, long-term fertility concerns and psychosocial issues. With treatment, education and support, girls can manage their PCOS and live active, healthy lives.
Conditions we treat
At least 1 in 10 females of reproductive age meet the criteria for the diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome. Many girls first develop symptoms in adolescence.
