Fontan procedure outcomes
We track outcomes from common procedures as “Quality Indicators” for congenital heart surgery. The following data show Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's (CHOP) outcomes for the Fontan procedure, the third procedure in a series of surgeries to repair single ventricle heart defects.
The cardiac surgery indicators are included in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Congenital Heart Surgery Database and in the National Quality Forum (NQF) standards for pediatric heart surgery. The STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database contains data from over 100 congenital heart surgery centers in North America. The NQF is a nonprofit organization that sets or endorses standards to measure quality in healthcare.

Risk Adjustment: How Outcomes are Measured
It is misleading to simply compare the risk of dying after surgery between hospitals. There are significant differences in the types surgeries at different hospitals based on factors such as a patient's age and complexity of heart defect. Measuring outcomes by attempting to account for these factors is a method called risk adjustment. However, there is no standard way to adjust for these differences.
