Apheresis Program
Apheresis is a procedure in which a person’s blood is passed through a machine that separates out one part of it and returns the rest to the person. Apheresis can help children who have a variety of serious conditions to recover more quickly and feel better.
We are one of the largest and most experienced pediatric apheresis programs in the nation. We are experts in adapting apheresis machines, which were originally designed for adults, for use in the treatment of children of all ages, including infants.
At Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), we know how to comfort and distract young patients who need apheresis. We support them through the placement of IVs (needle sticks) and help them remain calm during the procedure, which can last two to three hours.
How we serve you
We offer every type of apheresis. Which service your child needs will depend on their medical condition.
Why choose us for pediatric apheresis
Each year, we perform nearly 2,000 pediatric apheresis procedures in our state-of-the-art Apheresis Unit, giving us unmatched expertise. Many centers that perform apheresis in adults do not have the experience or ability to perform these specialized procedures in children.
