Infant Breathing Disorder Center
Your child's physician may refer her to the Infant Breathing Disorder Center in order to evaluate a respiratory disorder during sleep. We evaluate infants up to 18 months of age with a variety of breathing and sleep disorders, including:
- Clinical evidence of apnea
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Disturbances of respiratory control
- Possible gastroesophageal reflux
Infants referred to the center may be evaluated as inpatients or outpatients depending upon the type and severity of the clinical presentation. We may recommend inpatient evaluation for infants with apnea since this may be a sign of a systemic disease. The inpatient evaluation requires only a one night stay in the hospital. We will then arrange for infant home monitoring, counseling and a follow up visit by skilled staff after your child's discharge as needed.
Our expertise is well recognized: Each year, practicing physicians from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and as far away as Florida, Hawaii and Hong Kong refer infants to our Center. We have also evaluated more than 25,000 infants and young children since the inception of our program.
Our services
Sleep studies
We perform overnight sleep studies using noninvasive monitoring seven days a week on the inpatient units, with observation by the nursing staff. We also are able to evaluate the presence of gastroesophageal reflux with a pH probe study. An experienced neonatologist reviews each study after it is completed.
Home care
If the patient requires monitoring after discharge from the hospital, we arrange for the delivery of monitors or other specialized equipment and provide training for the caregiver.
Follow-up program
Our Center provides a comprehensive follow-up program after discharge and review the follow-up plan with the parents prior to discharge.
