Understanding your child’s bill
Even if your insurance plan covers your visit to CHOP, you may be responsible for cost-sharing expenses, such as co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles. The amount will vary depending on your insurance and will be found on your child’s bill. It is important that you contact your insurance carrier for more information about your plan benefits and anticipated cost-sharing expenses.
For additional clarification, you should also check with the physician arranging your treatment at a hospital or facility to determine whether the physician participates with the same plan as the recommended hospital or facility. Sometimes, a physician may be considered in-network with your insurance plan, but the facility might be out-of-network.
There are three bills you might receive for services provided by Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. These include a Hospital bill (green), a Physician bill (blue) and a Home Care bill (white). Laboratory, radiology services and other non-physician provider services (e.g., physical therapy and speech therapy) are typically billed on a Hospital bill.
Physician services are billed separately from Hospital charges and are not included in Hospital charges. CHOP physicians who provide services at CHOP locations, including Ambulatory Surgical Centers, participate with the same insurance plans as the Hospital, which are included in our list of insurance plans accepted at CHOP. See below for more information about each of these bills.
We updated the look of your billing statement. We’ve made changes to make statements easier to understand and include additional helpful information.
- Balance due is more clearly identified.
- Payment plan balance, remaining payments and terms are in a separate section.
- Guarantor number is highlighted, so it’s easier to find.
- Details for each encounter, including location, date and service, are listed.
- Information on CHOP’s Family Health Coverage Program, which will help you secure insurance for your child, is included on every statement.
- Quick Pay feature streamlines online bill payments. Try it at chop.edu/billpay.
Your child’s statements, plus other billing information, are viewable online via MyCHOP. MyCHOP is the Hospital’s online patient portal, giving you access to your child’s health record via a computer or mobile device. Hospital privacy policy requires that access to billing information be restricted solely to users currently receiving statements in the mail. To expand your access, please inquire at your next office visit. To set up your MyCHOP account, you will need the 15-character access code provided by a CHOP provider. If you don't have a MyCHOP access code or need a new one, contact your CHOP provider to request one.
Learn more about each of these bills:
Hospital bill
This bill covers charges for hospital services. This includes things such as: procedures; overnight stays; supplies and equipment; and technical services, such as lab tests and radiology studies. This also includes charges for services provided by non-physician clinical staff. This includes but is not limited to: audiologists; dietitians; and physical, occupational and speech therapists. If your child received any such service, even if it was during a visit with a specialist at any Children's Hospital of Philadelphia location, you will receive a Hospital bill. This explains why you might receive a Hospital bill without ever coming to the main Hospital building at 3401 Civic Center Blvd. in Philadelphia.
