About Steven G. Docimo, MD

Dr. Steven G. Docimo is the executive leader of CHOP’s strategic growth initiatives, with responsibility for External Affairs, Business Development and Strategy. Dr. Docimo is a seasoned physician leader with more than 20 years of hospital/healthcare executive and administrative experience.

Preceding his current role, Dr. Docimo served as Senior Vice President for Business Development and Chief Operating Officer of CHOP’s Care Network for three years, with responsibility for: strategic and operational leadership of regional, national and global clinical business development; affiliations and partnerships; and CHOP’s primary care network and urgent and specialty care centers.

Prior to joining CHOP, Dr. Docimo served as Chief Medical Officer for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC (CHP), a position he held for more than 10 years. Dr. Docimo also oversaw the Children’s Specialty Services academic practice plan within University of Pittsburgh Physicians, directing the health system’s investment in the pediatric service line and creating aligned compensation and incentive plans for the specialty divisions. In 2016-2017, in addition to his hospital role, Dr. Docimo served as President of Children’s Community Pediatrics, the wholly owned primary care subsidiary of CHP, responsible for 250,000 pediatric lives.

A member of various professional and scientific societies, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Urological Association, Dr. Docimo has authored more than 300 publications, including serving as editor-in-chief for the latest two editions of the standard text in the field of pediatric urology, the Kelalis-King-Belman Textbook of Clinical Pediatric Urology. In 2023, Becker’s Healthcare named him a Health System Chief Strategy Officer to Know.  

Dr. Docimo earned his MD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and a master’s degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College. He trained in general surgery and urology at Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD, Georgetown University, and the Harvard Program in Urology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA. He completed an AUA Scholars Research Fellowship in the Department of Urology at Boston Children’s Hospital. After serving for three years on the adult urology faculty at Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, he completed a fellowship and joined the faculty in pediatric urology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 2000, he became the first chief of the new Division of Pediatric Urology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, leading a vigorous clinical and academic group with a highly respected fellowship program.
