On Friday, September 13, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and The Wawa Foundation hosted their first Helping Hands Community Care Challenge. The event brought together hundreds of representatives from the corporate community for a high-energy, high-impact day of service to make a tangible difference for CHOP patients.
Throughout the volunteer event, participants gathered resources and packed 14,000+ kits to support a diverse set of programs and patient populations at CHOP, including:
- Activity kits to bring joy to inpatient children, aiding the critical mission of the Department of Child Life, Education and Creative Arts Therapy
- Bags filled with supplies for patient families for CHOP’s Hospital School Program and Care Network
- Hygiene kits for teens in CHOP’s Care Network and Homeless Health Initiative
- Activity and comfort kits to support families while in CHOP’s Emergency Department.
Additionally, funds raised will enable the expansion and elevation of CHOP's Wawa Volunteer Services program, creating a ripple of kindness within CHOP’s hospital walls as well as in the community.
CHOP and Wawa’s long-standing relationship dates back to 1855, and both organizations share a commitment to compassionate care for children, an emphasis on serving the entire family and a belief that volunteerism can change communities. The event purpose was apparent and clear: to bring together the corporate community for a day of shared impact, as it takes a team to heal a child – and volunteers are an essential part of that team.
