CHOP’s Youth Heart Watch Program Recognizes Six “Heart Safe” Schools in School District of Philadelphia
Leaders from CHOP's Youth Heart Watch and the School District of Philadelphia present certificates to six schools recognizing their Heart Safe School status.

The Youth Heart Watch Program (YHW) at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), an affiliate of Project ADAM, will recognize six schools in the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) as the first “Heart Safe” schools in the District.

In order to be designated as a Youth Heart Watch Heart Safe School, schools must meet a specific list of criteria, including placement of an AED that is accessible from any part of the school’s campus within 3 minutes; designation of a CPR-AED site coordinator and trained cardiac emergency response team; a cardiac emergency response plan; annual awareness training on sudden cardiac arrest, and an on-site cardiac response drill practicing CPR and AED use.

To recognize this milestone, leaders from the YHW and the SDP will host an event where teachers and staff will complete an on-site emergency response drill, in addition to receiving certificates recognizing their Heart Safe School status.

The six schools being recognized are: Bridesburg Elementary School, Watson Comly School, Horace Furness High School, James Rhoads School, School of the Future and Allen M. Stearne School. The SDP aims to have all schools designated as Heart Safe in the next few years.

Each year, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) claims the lives of an estimated 7,000 children and adolescents in the U.S. SCA is less common in children and adolescents than adults, but it can affect anyone, even those who are young and physically fit. Survival of SCA in the community is as low as 10%, but in schools that have a response plan and practiced drills, survival can increase to >80%.

The Youth Heart Watch at CHOP (YHW) program aims to prevent SCD among children and adolescents by placing AEDs in schools, recreation centers and other public places. YHW provides training assistance and education for students and staff with the hope that lives will be saved through the use of AEDs, and also through increased awareness of the warning signs, symptoms and risk factors for this condition.

All Philadelphia School District schools in Philadelphia have an AED and are being served by the Youth Heart Watch Program.
