Dr. Adam Wolpaw and Dr. Timothy Spear of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) received the Scholar Hope Award and Young Investigator Award respectively from Hyundai Hope On Wheels. Together they received $650,000 to aid in vital research for neuroblastoma. During the Hyundai Hope On Wheels handprint ceremony, the doctors were presented with special lab coats to recognize them as grant recipients.
Dr. Wolpaw’s, the Scholar Hope Awardee, received a $400,000 grant to advance critical research in immunotherapy as it relates to cancer treatments.
“Neuroblastoma is a devastating childhood cancer and better approaches to treating this disease are desperately needed,” said Dr. Wolpaw, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and an attending physician within the Cancer Center at CHOP. “Thanks to the funding from Hyundai Hope On Wheels, our team will be able to use new models to understand why immunotherapy fails and to develop approaches to make it work better. We expect this will have important implications for treating other types of solid tumors as well.”
As the Young Investigator Awardee, Dr. Timothy Spear, fourth year fellow in CHOP’s Hematology/Oncology Program, received a $250,000 grant to research vaccination strategies to help aid the success of cancer treatments.
“High-risk neuroblastoma has a cure rate of less than 50 percent and patients with relapsed disease are rarely cured,” Dr. Spear noted. “Through our research backed by Hyundai Hope On Wheels, we will be able to perform cutting-edge vaccination strategies to enhance immune cells’ anti-tumor activity.”
“We are grateful to Hyundai for their ongoing commitment to groundbreaking research and advancing treatment approaches so researchers like us can propel to the next phase of testing, ultimately, bringing better therapies and cures to children with cancer,” Dr. Wolpaw added.
“Hyundai Hope On Wheels is proud to partner with the leading hospitals and institutions like Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to fund research that drives innovation and medical advances for children battling cancer,” says John Guastaferro, executive director, Hyundai Hope On Wheels. “We are thankful for the ongoing commitment and life-saving efforts of our hospital partners nationwide to help put an end to childhood cancer.”
With this latest grant award, Hyundai Hope On Wheels has provided more than $7.2 million to CHOP, aiding critical pediatric cancer research. This year, Hyundai Hope On Wheels Foundation reached a milestone and surpassed $250 million of total lifetime giving to novel therapeutic approaches and pioneering options through more than 1,300 research and programmatic grants to over 175 hospitals and research institutions.
