Report on COVID-19 deaths
The CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) simultaneously published the findings of a descriptive analysis of COVID-19 deaths based on three WHO data sources. Data were stratified by country based on World Bank income status. Important takeaways included:
- Globally, 80% of deaths occurred in people 60 years of age or older.
- Excess mortality in this group was most extensive in upper- and lower-middle-income countries.
- The WHO set global targets of 70% populational vaccination coverage and 100% coverage for older adults. Neither were met. By December 2022, with 79% of countries reporting, the data suggested a 59% median country-wide vaccine coverage among the entire population (range by income levels: 21% to 74%) and a 76% median coverage among older adults (range by income levels: 33% to 90%).
- Rates of coverage were higher among older adults in 77% of countries.
“We Can Do This” campaign resources
The American Public Health Association (APHA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have partnered to educate the public about the potential for severe COVID-19 disease and the availability of treatments, particularly early during infection. The “We Can Do This” campaign materials are freely available for use by others working to educate the public. To check out the resources, including handouts, posters, social media graphics and more, visit the APHA’s campaign webpage or go to the campaign website.
