What are liver tumors?
There are many types of benign and malignant (cancer) tumors that can occur in the liver.
Hepatoblastoma is the most common malignant tumor of the liver and is typically diagnosed in children younger than 3 years old. While the cause of hepatoblastoma is unknown, some genetic disorders put a child at greater risk of developing this type of cancer.
Other liver tumors of childhood include hemangiomas, which are tumors of abnormal blood vessel growth, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
At The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, children with liver tumors are treated by a multidisciplinary team including physicians from the Biesecker Pediatric Liver Center, the Cancer Center, and the Division of Gastroenterology (GI), Hepatology and Nutrition.
