March 14, 2014 — CHOP Lactation Director Diane L. Spatz, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN, was a featured speaker at the 2nd International Conference on Breastfeeding Sick Babies on March 12-14 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The three-day conference included seminars on breastfeeding promotion, how human milk helps sick babies, maximizing milk supply for mothers of sick infants, breastfeeding support for moms of hospitalized babies, and optimizing breastfeeding for late preterm babies.

One of the highlights of this year’s conference was a six-hospital retrospective about implementing Spatz’s 10 Steps for Promoting and Protecting Breastfeeding for Sick Babies. Spatz introduced the program at last year’s international conference.

A panel discussion led by Meera Khorana, MD, Spatz, and representatives from the six hospitals detailed the challenges and solutions of transferring the program from the United States into Southeast Asia.

The conference, held at the Century Park Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand, was hosted by the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health, Thai Breastfeeding Center Foundation, and related health networks.
