About Jason Van Batavia, MD, MSTR

Jason P. Van Batavia, MD, is an attending pediatric urologist in the Division of Urology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is an award-winning researcher and assistant professor of urology in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Van Batavia received his undergraduate degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University and his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University in New York City. He completed his general surgery internship and urology residency at Colombia University Medical Center/New York - Presbyterian Hospital and received the Mitchell C. Benson Resident Research Award at graduation. He completed his fellowship in pediatric urology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and stayed on as an attending physician. In addition to his clinical work, he is currently completing his Master of Science in Translational Research from the University of Pennsylvania, which is grant-supported.

Dedicated to the best patient outcomes, Dr. Van Batavia approaches patient care from a comprehensive perspective. He is committed to the well-being of his patients and their families, and ensures that each patient receives the individualized care required. His scope of care is evidence-based and wide-ranging, and includes voiding dysfunction, lower urinary tract dysfunction, disorders of sex development, hypospadias, neurogenic bladder secondary to myelomeningocele or other spinal processes, urodynamics, renal and ureteral obstruction, and vesicoureteral reflux. His knowledge in conjunction with his desire to provide the best pediatric care has led him to spearhead a variety of clinical and translational projects that continue to advance the field of pediatric urology.

In his young career, Dr. Van Batavia’s expertise in and contributions to pediatric urology have been recognized via numerous awards, and he has received three federal and national grants since joining the CHOP urology faculty. He is the author or co-author of over 50 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, reviews, book chapters and editorials.

In May 2018, Dr. Van Batavia received the Diokonos-Lapides Grand Prize award for his research in how the brain controls urinating. This international award is recognized as the most prestigious urology award for neuro-urology research. He is currently funded with a competitive KL2 grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Van Batavia is a member of several national professional societies, including the Society for Pediatric Urology, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section of Urology, the Society for Basic Urologic Research, and the Society for Neuroscience. He is currently a Co-Chair for Membership for the AAP Section of Urology and attends their biannual executive committee meetings.

Dr. Van Batavia was recently interviewed by CHOP’s Research Institute about his research specialty. Read the Q&A

  • Both the PA and doctor went above and beyond to make a very uncomfortable child want to stay and hang with them! They were exceptional at developing rapport with a kid who did not want to go to this visit.

  • Dr. Van Batavia and the NP were absolutely wonderful and took the time to listen and explain everything to me (even though I could tell it was a busy day in the office) they didn't rush me and were so kind and caring. They even performed the procedure we needed that day since I was worried we wouldn't be ableTo get again before moving. I so thankful that I had Dr. Van Batavia caring for my baby!

About the Patient Experience Rating System

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient’s protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care. The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
